More Urban Wildlife

So I'm thinking about starting a regular post about all my fun, furry, feathered and winged friends that visit my front yard and backyard on a daily basis (I'm thinking of calling it fur & feathers or My Great Outdoors- not so sure about that though - still brainstorming). I know it delights me and gives me so much joy to look out my front window and see the wide variety of birds eating out of the bird feeder or the squirrels scampering up and down the tree, chasing each other round and round. I love that I have so many little creatures to watch even though I live in the middle of town. I find it relaxing to sit on my front porch in my little white rocker and watch the birds, having an evening snack. Animals can be so comical. Take for instance my little buddy here:

I came home the other day to find him having a little snack on the bird feeder. Mind you, it's not a squirrel feeder - but don't tell him that. I ran inside to grab a camera so I could snap some shots.

He let me get really close! So of course, I pushed my luck and kept inching closer (no thoughts of rabies or other wild animal diseases in my head)! I kept inching up until apparently he thought I had gotten close enough and gave me the crazed 'I'm going to jump on your face and maul you to death' look:

So, I backed off. And he happily went back to eating all the birdseed! If I had to guess, I would say he's probably the culprit behind the bucket of birdseed now being spilled all over my front porch!

Did you know that squirrels have a life span of only 5 to 7 years and they have not evolved since the last 37 years? They are also so fast that they can run at a speed of 20 miles per hour (so my question is, why do you see them dead on the road so often).

So stay tuned. I have lots of fun stuff going on in the wild outdoors in front of the Elf House... my own little Elf House creatures!

Do you have anything you love about the outdoors around where you live?

Lots of Love...

  1. LMAO! I'm so glad that little critter didn't pounce on you. Squirrels are adorable but they scare me. I love to see my dog react to the world around her. Its so cute! Except for when she decides to roll around in the dirt. I cant wait until next week's critter post!
