I don't sew. I don't even sew a button on when it comes up missing. No, seriously, I'm more apt to get rid of something when a button goes missing or a zipper goes askew, than to fix it (I can hear the *gasps* at every computer in America. Don't judge). However, here of late, I'm really pushing myself to do and try things I haven't before. I'm so inspired and excited and loving every minute I get to spend in what I like to call my 'non 8 to 5 life.' So, with that said, my newest adventure coming up is due, because of that said '8 to 5 life.'
My work has a Safety Jackpot program to encourage and reward safe practices and procedures (I work in HR for a manufacturing company). We get scratch-off tickets (much like lotto tickets) for doing certain things. The tickets have a point value and we have this nifty little book with different 'prizes' we can order based on the number of points we've earned. Mind you, I've been at my job for 2 years in June. I've never ordered anything because I couldn't figure out what I could possibly want. That was, until I was flipping through again last week and came across this little beauty:
Now, I'm sure it's not the top notch, state or the art, super duper sewing machine extreme. However, you're talking to someone who hasn't even attempted to sew a button... so I figured, we all gotta start somewhere. So I took the plunge, sent off my points and it showed up on my doorstep yesterday.
The book calls it a Michley 'Lil' Sew and says it's a multi-purpose sewing machine featuring eight built-in stitching patters, offers double speed, double thread and forward/reverse functions. I have no clue what any of that means! It also says it comes with an automatic thread rewind, LED sewing light and a foot pedal. Hey, what more could a girl ask for (well, a girl starting out, that is).
So, I'm going to give it my best shot. Might even invest the time and effort in one of the sewing classes I've seen online and mentioned in some of the other blogs. And I'll be sure to keep you posted and share all of my attempts at projects.
Encouragement at this point is okay. And any advice is appreciated to.

ReplyDeleteYAY, congrats, and welcome to the world of machine sewing!!! I sew tons and tons, and I've yet to do a button or button hole with my sewing machine, so don't feel bad (I sew them by hand instead). I love sewing with my machine - some advice would just be to read the manual carefully - I was amazed at what I learned by reading mine! Also be sure to keep your machine clean (fuzz can build up - your manual will show you how to clean it out - it will hopefully have come with a little brush to brush that out). And most of all, have fun! Don't get frustrated - just go slowly and enjoy yourself! :)
ReplyDeletethanks for the encouragment and good advice. hopefully I'll have some time this weekend to read the manual and play around with it! I'm going to try to be very patient and not give up quickly... that's the advice everyone has given me - I need to stick with it and not give up!
ReplyDeleteYou are right we do have to start somewhere. I purchased my first sewing machine years ago at Walmart it was he cheapest one they had. It has served its purpose. Sure I would love all the bells and whistles but I like my testy/moody cheap sewing machine for now. :)
